Manic Depression Treatment

Medicinal treatment for manic depression with antidepressants is the first option for health professionals. Antidepressants help the patients feel mentally at ease and peace. Doctors many times depend on antidepressants for treating patients of bipolar disorder. Tricyclic Drugs prevent the reuptake of serotonin, epinerphrine and norepinephrine and treat depression. Antidepressants are not the first choice of physicians as intake of these drugs may show adverse effects. Bupropion (Wellbutrin), trazodone (Desurel) and maprotiline are effective antidepressants.

Other medications include anticonvulsants, antipsychotic and anti-anxiety medications to treat beating depression.

SSRI Treatment

SSRI is the abbreviated form of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Nowadays, physicians prefer SSR inhibitors to other medications for the effective treatment of bipolar depression. They prove to be beneficial producing almost no side effects. The drawbacks of taking SSR inhibitors include GI and sleep problems. In some cases, it may bring about an unusual change in sexual function. Fuoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil) and sertraline (Zoloft) are some effective SSR inhibitors.

MAOI Treatment

MAOI stands for Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors. The enzymatic degeneration of norepinephrine and serotonin is hampered with MAO inhibitors. Doctors recommend these inhibitors for those patients of bipolar depression who suffer from insomnia and anorexia. Only one disadvantage of taking them is that they carry risk of high toxicity. Patients under this mode of medication are required to comply with dietary restrictions. Isocarboxazid (Marplan) is one of MAO inhibitors.
